I think this is one of those films that when I saw the initial trailer (above) it caught my eye, but I didn't feel the need to go running toward the theatres. After the 2009 award season I remember thinking I should pick it up the next time I was renting a film but it took me over another year and a new country to finally do just that.

This film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Male Lead role and best Supporting Female lead in just about every awards show during the 2008-09 season, and while Mickey Rourke won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for the role he didn't take home the OSCAR (Sean Penn took it for his role in MILK)

This is a fantastic movie with a slow build up, I really didn't start to enjoy the film until the beginning of the second act. The film doesn't sell the character of Randy "The Ram" as the most together person. It does however portray a flawed and there fore much more accurate human being.

Randy is an absent father, a single man in love with a stripper that only sees him as a customer. His body and age are fast becoming bigger opponents than any he has in the Ring. If you want a good story, with fantastic acting this is the film for you I give it {{{{4.5 out of 5}}}}

This film takes a while to get going but it is really worth it if you stick it out. It is quiet and understated film considering the subject matter. The reason I enjoyed the film is because it had a theme I could really understand or at least comprehend.

It is basically about a wrestler who is no longer in his hey-day and really should stop... but he has nothing else to do and no one else to turn to. It is a sad story but one that is relatable in this culture of fame and celebrity that we live in. I found it moving to see this man trying to clutch onto the remnants of a family, to find love (in a strip club), to get a normal job... but he knows nothing but wrestling.

Rourke provides a really good performance (although apparently he didn't learn his lines because he was drunk... maybe that is why he is so quiet) as does Marissa Tomei and Rachel Evan Wood. In one scene The Ram cuts his head with a blade as part of the wrestling performance... Rourke actually did this for real. Everyone say ewww.

As James said this is a film about a flawed man, a human being. It is moving and strangely warming - I guess it isn't that he has nothing, its that he has one thing he is devoted to - and even if you aren't a wrestling fan you will enjoy the story. I give this film {{{4.5 out of 5}}}

  1. I agree with everything that Helen and James have said. For me the film would score at least 4.5 on the strength of Mickey Rourke's performance alone. He was a revelation. The film completely immerses you in his world. The wrestling scenes are graffic, totally believable and often hard to watch. Despite what the title and basic story line would suggest, the film is poignant and sensitive. Give it a go.
