I grew up with the BBC adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia and love the idea of this fantasy world you can be pulled into. It is the ultimate escapism, and this film is also the ultimate adventure, sailing the seas, visiting new lands and experiencing new magics. I loved it.

Dawn Treader was always one of my favourites in the series because it has the introduction of Eustace Scrubb (fantastic name). Will Poulter (from Son of Rambow which, by the way, is a great film) plays Eustace and gets the balance between annoying, funny and likeable just right.

As always with the Narnia films the great special effects manage to compensate for the less than perfect acting skills of some the cast. I think this is my favourite of the Narnia films so far and I keep my fingers crossed for The Silver Chair... of course that film won't be the same with the BBC adaptation's Tom Baker. I give this film {{{3 out of 5}}}

There are very few novel to film adaptations that make me as nervous as this franchise. I have loved the Chronicles of Narnia for nearly my entire life. This series of books were the first actual books I can remember reading and comprehending as a child and to this day I use characters from the book in my online presence.

When I was younger the Voyage of the Dawn Treader was the adventure that I wanted to be a part of the most. The Chronicles are C.S. Lewis' loose adaptation of the Bibles New Testament as well as his attempt to create a world similar to the one created by fellow author and close friend J.R.R. Tolkien.

To say that each of these films have made me nervous is unfair, while I was nervous before I had seen them I have been pleasantly surprised by each film. While they have taken many liberties, some more subtle than others the over all feel of each film manages to completely encompass Lewis' original works.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a fantastic film that unfortunately felt the need to jump on the recent 3D bandwagon that seems to have infected the majority of the film industry over the last few years. To say the 3D was unnecessary seems to much of an understatement, this is an epic telling of an epic journey it did not need the less than epic 3D treatment. {{{I give it 3 out of 5}}}

QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE IMAGINARY WORLD?

  1. I've been wondering if I should see this. I haven't honestly been the hugest fan of the Narnia films. Not because they're bad, but I never read the books growing up and don't feel especially connected to the story. Thanks for the review.

    Favorite imaginary world: The first thing that came to my mind was Harry Potter's world. For sure.

  2. The films could have been done better we think. They aren't wonderful adaptations - the books are much richer in detail. But they are fun if you like the world of Narnia. The wizarding world of Harry Potter would be Helen's fave too!
