Devil is not the type of film I choose to see on a regular basis. Although I enjoy psychological thrillers and suspense horror I have become a bit disillusioned with the amount of them that Hollywood has spewed out recently. However I gave it a go and, if I am being honest, I am still disillusioned.
Devil is not a bad film per se, it just isn't really the sort of movie you can have a strong opinion about. Although there are a good number of 'jump' moments I was never actually scared. Once the 'jump' was over I went back to being slightly indifferent about the story.
It is very hard for horror/thriller films to not fall into the bucket load of cliches media savvy movie-goers know so well - a little too hard for Devil apparently. Indeed overall this film was interesting to watch but it was just too predictable and ordinary.
I want a horror film to put me on edge and give me something to think about long after the final frame disappears. Unfortunately this film did neither of those things. I give Devil {{{2 out of 5}}}
He said: Much like Helen, I too have lost what ever prior sense of fear that Hollywood was at one time able to conjure in me. I could ramble on about how much the original (I say original because much like every other film from my childhood it is currently being remade) Child's Play film scared the living daylights out of me at as a 9 year old boy at 2 in the morning during a friends birthday sleepover. Those fictional stories of fantasy and horror have long since become far less frightening in light of how scary reality can be every day.
Devil is really not a bad film and there are even a couple of the standard twists that story writer M. Knight has become known by. Devil is the first in a planned collection loosely named the Night Chronicles. According to the official website "The Night Chronicles is a production entity with Media Rights Capital, focused on generating a series of supernatural thrillers. The films are based on original ideas from M. Night Shyamalan" loosely translated the perpetually downward spiraling writer and director has out sourced his content to other directors.
If you are a fan of overly predictable "Horror/Thrillers" this film is right up your alley, thought with it being October there are sure to be plenty more films in the coming weeks that are sure to be worth your hard earned money. I give this film {{{2.5 out 5}}}

This film has been one of our family picks since I can remember. It is one of those films that always makes me smile no matter what. Overboard is probably one of my favourite comedies of all time. To start with has anyone ever seen a Garry Marshall film that didn't make them feel all warm inside? A few other of his directorial masterpieces include Beaches, Pretty Woman and, more recently, Valentine's Day. He has a theme of comedies with heart and this one is no different.
Of course the main credit I have to give to Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, the leading actors and also a real life couple. I class this as their best comedy roles on screen. Interestingly when this film came out it was actually a big flop for both of them and I really can't understand why. They have fantastic chemistry when they play hatred of each other and when they fall in love. Perhaps it was one of those films that needed a few years post-release perspective. Or maybe I am the only person who loves it! But I doubt that very much.
While this film is a 'bit silly' in its plot it does have a wonderful warmth to it. It is essentially a film about how true love can cross boundaries of class and expectation. It is also about giving people second chances: Hawn plays a - how can I put this nicely? - upper class stuck up bitch who has only disgust for Russell's character (a hardworking dad who struggles with parental control). When she gets amnesia what begins as a tale of revenge and payback turns into something special, something real and deep.
I can't recommend this film enough. It has fantastic comic performances from leads and supporting actors alike, and it has some real gems of moments that give you a fuzzy feeling and make you want to hug your pillow (or partner!). I give this film (((5 out of 5.)))

Overboard is one of those films that you can't help but to smile all the way through. It has some moments that are a bit suspect, but endearing all the same. Garry Marshall was one of the first directors that enjoyed casting his friends in every film.
Hector Elizondo has a small part in this film that nearly goes by unnoticed. (You would recognize him as the Hotel Concierge in Pretty Woman) And there are others that have slipped my mind.
There are some scenes in this film that are a bit close to being beyond awkward. I think it goes with out saying that if a film about kidnapping ad forced parenthood was released now, it wouldn't do well in theatres.
My Dad (Happy Fathers Day!) really enjoys this film as well, it's fun to hear him laughing the whole way through the film. This is a great family film and is completely worth viewing. I enjoyed it and I think you will as well. I give it [[[4.5 out of 5]]] They said: This is a fantastic film, and one of the few Eighties films you can watch that doesn't feel completely and hopelessly dated with each viewing. It has to be said that I am not the biggest fan of these kind of slapstick comedies. I find the humour immature and, while I understand that is the whole point, I just don't find it that funny. I spent most of the film not hating it and not loving it but rather finding it mildly amusing. I didn't laugh out loud for at least 20 minutes though so my expectations were pretty low from the get go. However it redeemed itself in some places and overall this film is - in my expert film reviewers opinion - 'alright'.
As I was watching I was think about what my rating would be for this film. I have to admit there were scenes or events that had me as low as 2 and some that had me as high as a 3.5. The best part for me was when they parodied Rain Man. There is a moment where they come down the escalator, one character as Tom Cruise and one as Dustin Hoffman, with Iko Iko playing over the top. It is these kind of moments that we film buffs love. Little homages and nods to other films where you the viewer can feel privileged that you 'get it'.
The lowest point... I have to say there were several so it is hard to choose. There was a scene with a woman breastfeeding - always going to be a cheap gag. Congratulations script writers... you made a boob joke! Well done you! These are the moments which make me not like this style of comedy. Jokes about breasts and tazering each other just can't stand up to intelligent or ironic humour.
In terms of characters they were pretty much what I expected them to be. All of the main characters are, of course, complete idiots but Alan's idiocy is much more offbeat making him stand out to me. But the filmmakers played on too many stereotypes and I spent a lot of time willing them to go somewhere different from the cliche they were leading up to.
Overall this really wasn't a bad film despite some of my harsh comment. But I am not going to rave about a film that a bunch of twelve year old boys who spend their time looking at Playboys and discussing who has the best knockers. I give this film 3 out of 5.
He said: I have to start this review stating that I saw this film when it was first released in the states with my brother and we both really enjoyed it. I haven't seen it since that first time, but I did enjoy it.
I agree with what Helen has said above, it is cliche and typical guy humor, but I think that reason alone is one of the reasons we went to see it. I really enjoy these type of comedies. They could be done better and they could easily be more intelligent but I think their imaturity and need to go for the easy "boob" jokes is part of their charm.
There are a lot of films that set out to be a certain type of film, be it comedy, Drama, Sci-fi or a hybrid of some type, and completely miss the mark. This is really not one of those types of films it fulfils the promise it makes with the trailer. You will laugh, you will enjoy the film and it wont be the worst film you see this year.
Obviously I enjoy films like this and it is for that reason that I am a little more lax when they play it safe with the easy cliched types of comedy that we see in a lot of current films. [[[I give this film 4 out of 5]]]

I have wanted to watch this film ever since I first saw the poster (and in actual fact I only saw the trailer just before watching the film itself). If you pay close attention to our blog I am sure I have mentioned at some point what a sucker I am for anything stuck in space. I have high expectations and I have to say - these expectations were definitely fulfilled by Moon. This film is a masterpiece and I really enjoyed it.
This film is about so many things and yet has a single primary actor, Sam Rockwell who I will go on to rave about (and there may be some drool) in just a moment. This film explores loneliness, perceptions of reality, morality, ethics, humanity, emotion and empathy. And it does so with actually quite a simple basic story. Without giving the whole plot away this is basically a film about a guy called Sam who has a contract to work for an energy company, on the moon, alone, for three years. Then one day he discovers someone who is... well him. I was instantly intrigued by this premise.
Sam Rockwell was given the hard task of first playing someone who has been alone for three years, and second acting to himself. He did both of these wonderfully. I personally cannot conceive of the things being alone for three years would do to your mind but Rockwell managed to achieve a connection with the audience through his very honest and raw acting. His interaction with GERTY (the computer) was was warming mcuh like Tom Hanks' Wilson in Castaway. And then of course it is not easy for an actor to interact with himself on screen but again this was done very well by Rockwell, supported by the effects team.
By the way you get a shot of him naked. He has a nice bum. This is the drool part.
One of the things that impressed me most about this film was the cinematography and the fact that unlike a lot of films set on the moon or an alien planet, this didn't look like it was filmed in a desert outside Los Angeles. In fact it looked indeed as if it were shot on the moon! I know it can't have been - but the effects were beautifully done. I have read that they were models rather than CGI which I always think gives a better finish, provided it is done well.
If the above doesn't convince you then I know this next fact will interest at least some of my friends: Duncan Jones, the debuting director, is the son of David Bowie. That man can do a good space song - I guess it is no wonder his son would direct a film set on the moon with such grace and beauty.
Made on a budget of $5million, which is very little in cinema terms, this film is worth a watch. It isn't action packed, it isn't a laugh a minute, but I would be very surprised if you walked away unaffected by this bittersweet story: a story of human capability in regards to what our race is capable of surviving, and what our race is capable of doing. I give this film 4.5 out of 5.

From an English person's point of view this film could have turned out to be an American Football movie and therefore alien to myself. But it wasn't. Yes this film is based around a guy who becomes a famous American Footballer but the film is about so much more than that. It is about misconceptions, depth, loyalty, love, compassion and family.
It also isn't just a film about a black man in a white family. To me this film was about a boy from a disadvantaged background being giving a chance to shine. Oher (the boy) starts as an underachiever but anyone watching the film who thinks he is simple or thick is much mistaken. Here is a boy who is bright, clever and willing to learn, all he needs is a bit of attention and encouragement.
It is this aspect of the film that really got me because there is so much truth in that - I want teachers to watch this film and learn. Youths shouldn't be dismissed away because they struggle. With a little nuture everyone can shine. That is what this film is about for me.
The film this most reminded me of was Erin Brockovich for several reasons; they are both true stories, they both deal with misconceptions and underestimating people because of how they look or behave, and they both have very strong lead females. Bullock very much deserved her Oscar for this role as the fiesty, strong-willed mother completely devoted to her family.
This film is a gem. I strongly recommend everyone watch it. It has a strong heart but is not cheesy at any point. I happily give this a {{{5 out of 5}}}
He said: It seems to be such a rare and unexpected exception to the rule, when I look forward to movie prior to seeing it and it turns out to be better than I had thought. I am very happy to report that the Blind Side is that exception. This is a wonderful film. It was released in the states in November, but only just came out last Friday on this side of the pond.
This film has all the heart of films like Rudy, Radio, and Remember the Titans and with about two thirds less American Football. While the basic story is about a young man that came from an underprivileged (and at times downright frightening background) to eventually become a first round NFL draft pick, it never falls into the trap of being a sports movie.
This is a heart-strings puller type of film. With out giving too much away seeing Michael stand up for his new adopted family at risk of his own life nearly had the entire theatre in tears. This is a wonderful and fantastic film. Another that will happily sit next to the afore-mentioned of it's type.
Based on the true story of current Baltimore Ravens Left Tackle Michael Oher (pronounced OAR) This is a brilliant and heart warming film and definitely should be watched with your entire family. I give it {{{5 out of 5}}} with no reservations

This film wasn't what I was expecting from the title although that is definately not a criticism. I was expecting two people to be putting together some kind of mega iTunes playlist... but actually the story is more sensible than that (I use the word sensible loosely). It is a 'guy who is hung up on girl meets girl who is clearly better for him and vice versa'. And if you are wondering - they bond over a love of music.
I really loved this film. The first reason is because of the casting. Michael Cera and Kat Dennings together have caused me to need to coin the phrase 'adorably awkward' (which, as James pointed out to me at the time, is quite possibly the caption for Cera's headshot.) Awkwardness happens in love and I appreciate films that show this. It made the film more realistic and empathetic.
The top casting continues to the supporting actors. Cera's and Dennings' friends are fantastic and although are not the most reliable people, they are the sort of friends you need - ones that knows what is best for you and above all, make you smile.
You should see this film because there are two main subplots: the search for a band hiding at a location in New York and, this is my faourite, the journey of a piece of chewing gum which... is... well just watch it. I give this film {{{4 out of 5}}}

I love sitting down to watch a quirky movie and actually enjoying it from start to finish. This is one of those quirky films. The title leads one to believe it will be heavily laden with a soundtrack begging to define the film, nothing could be further from the truth. There is a strong independent music vibe but it is never overwhelming or off putting.
One of the few teen comedies of late to not go for the raunchy visual gags that seem so prominent in recent years, (though there is one gag inducing scene involving Ari Graynor's character's chewing gum) This is a fun film about two people brought together by their friends, that find they are exactly what the other needs.
I have seen this film several times and have enjoyed more with each viewing. The fact that this is a film based on a young adult novel is encouraging as John Green's Paper Towns has been optioned by the same production company: Mandate Pictures. I give this film {{{4 out of 5}}}

There is nothing like a great film... and Knowing is nothing like a great film. It hardly seems worth writing a review for this film but I really must express how bloody awful it was. There were cheesy cliches, there were plot holes galore and there was Nicholas Cage - altogether it was never going to be a wining combination.
Films like this frustrate me because they *could* have been so good. The basic starting idea is really interesting; a girl predicts the future in code in the fifties and it is discovered in the present day. I think the writer/director focussed too much on trying to explain the prediction rather than exploring the reactions to the revelations.

This film was enjoyable but I have a few reservations. These reservations, I have to admit, generally have to do with it being at the wrong end of the Jim Carrey scale of acting. One end we have him in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, an amazing understated performance (so we know he is capable of it) and at the other end we have Ace Venture (... ergh).
This performance was slightly to the overact side of The Truman Show. And it really didn't need it. This is a film with the most over-the-top incredulous plot (made more unbelievable by the fact that it is a true story) about a gay con man and compulsive liar. It really didn't need the overacting on top of this. Carrey might want to take a leaf out of McGregor's book who showed that you can be camp without being cringe-worthy.
Essentially this is a love story - albeit an unconventional one - and I am a sucker for them. I found myself squeezing James' hand at the touching moments like a big sap. But these touching moments were few and far between, the directors much preferring to focus on the comedy. However the balance was an interesting mix.
I think people should give this film a go, especially if you aren't bothered as I am by the Jim Carrey overacting end of the scale. I give this film {{{3 out of 5}}}
He said: This is one of those films that when you sit down in the theatre before the film begins you really have no idea what to expect. I agree with Helen that Carrey's overacting was unnecessary in this film, but at the same time, with very few exceptions I completely believed he was Steven Russell. Unfortunately the same can not be said from me about Ewan McGregor, I really felt for the majority of the film the McGregor was"Playing Gay" rather than actually being gay.
Over all the film was fun, and the similarities between it and another well known atypical Romance film (Brokeback Mountain) are few and far between. The story is well portrayed and has you constantly asking yourself how this crazy and at times hilarious story could be even remotely true.
I left this film amused and entertained and with the aforementioned gripes aside would definitely encourage others to go out and see this film. I give it {{{3.5 out of 5}}}

Shakespeare said that 'love is blind'. This is not your typical story - but you will fall in love with what Steven Russell (Carrey) and Phillip Morris (McGregor)... because some people will do literally anything to see the face of the person they love.
I haven't seen a good new horror film, let alone one at the cinema, so this film was a winner with me. It had a good balance of moments that make you jump along with suspense, tension and simple gore. It wasn't too heavy on any one element and it therefore sustained my interest during the whole film. For example if there is too much gore in a film then by the end you are desenitised. I like to leave the cinema with a little jolly spine shiver.
I would have liked a bit more of the back story to how this 'crazy virus' came about but then I am a sucker for back story! However the film was open-ended and therefore leaves many possibilities for both prequels and sequels. I have no doubt there will be sequels... all horror films become franchises which spew out sequel after sequel until the intial idea becomes arbitrary and sucked dry of any content. Not that I am cynical or anything.
I enjoyed the location and context for this film. Set in a sparse farming village in a rural area near Cedar Rapids the characters were oh-too-easy (in the good way) to be cut off from help: cut a few phone lines and hijack a mobile phone tower and kazzam! Creepy isolation. When outsiders do come in they are unhelpful and mysterious which created a good sense of tension and bewilderment. I think they could have emphasised this more though.
Overall I really enjoyed this film. The plot has room for development but it is made up in part by Timothy Olyphant's great acting (he plays the main character of the town's 'refuses to be helpless' sheriff). If you like a good fright then give it a go. I give this film <<<3.5 out of 5>>>
He said: It would seem with a lot of the recent horror-genre films that have been released in the last few years that Hollywood has veered away from the scare in Horror movies to side more favorably with the expected gore. The Crazies is not an original idea (it is infact a respectful remake of George Romero's 1973 film of the same name) It is however a fun, scare you into clinging to your date's arm, throwing your popcorn,candy,drink type of horror film.
The character development was a nearly unprecedented amount for a horror film, not since we were first locked in a bathroom handcuffed to a pipe with only the loss of a limb via a rusted hack-saw as an avenue of escape, have I truly believed the fear that a character presented. Timothy Olyphant did an amazing job.
This isn't a film for everyone but it is a fun horror film. I enjoyed it from start to finish, like Helen I would have liked to see a little more background on the virus, but as she said, there is always a possibility of a sequel. I give this film a {{{3.5 out of 5}}}

Having just finished reading the Novel by Alice Sebold this Film was based on a mere three days prior to seeing the film the story of the novel was very fresh in my mind. As Helen mentions below there are some differences between the two but the feel and heart of the story remains. Peter Jackson rarely disappoints as a director with films such as Lord of the Rings and the recent re-imagining of King Kong as well as one of his first forays as a director The Frighteners (starring fan favorite Michael J Fox) This film is no exception it is beautiful and poignant and true to the source material which as far as I am concerned is of major importance. I truly loved the novel and enjoyed the film. With out hesitation I would recommend this film to friends and family, I give it {{{4.5 out of 5}}}

When I read the book that the film is adapted from a few years ago I was blown away by the poignancy and originality of the novel. The film matched the standard set by the book but in its own way. There were differences from the book, some bigger that others, but overall I was happy with how Jackson, Boyens and Walsh wrote the screenplay.
If you recognised those three surnames then you will probably know Andrew Lesnie as well. If not they are the people behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Lesnie being the incredible director of photography. If there is one thing that stood out in this film it was the beautiful way the film was shot. The special effects which depicted 'the in-between' were stunning and symbolic (provided by WETA Digital also of Lord of the Rings fame), and this was matched in the subtle cinematography in the 'living world'.
In addition to an accomplished crew the actors were very good and have got some very worthy nominations this awards season. The stand out performances were from Saoirse Ronan and Stanley Tucci - the girl and her murderer. They managed to portray their split roles very effectively: Ronan has to act her chatracter not just alive and dead but also tortured and distressed at not being able to reach her family against her need to move on. Tucci of course played friendly neighbour and rapist/murderer with a haunting accuracy.

I have to admit I wasn't expecting much from the film. The trailer looked rather... wishy-washy (technical term of course). But I actually really enjoyed it! My expectations of wishy-washyness weren't completely quashed though. There were plot gaps and occasional thoughtlessness but overall, I liked it.
The film was obviously aimed at those younger than me, probably people in their early teens who are at the best age to idolise these demi-gods, offspring of Greek gods. The dialogue reflected the younger audience, often handing the viewers information on a plate whereas more mature people might prefer a subtler approach.
Thinking about it logically how could this film not be fun and exciting with the Greek mythology behind it. Ancient Greece is a fascinating time in history and merging it with modern day might not be the most original concept but it is a winner. Although some characters were interesting, Medusa comes to mind although Uma's acting scene is not lengthy, other characters were not developed at all suchs as Hermes, Hades and Athena.
There were some moral issues that got on my wick a bit. The main one was that Percy is thought to be dyslexic... but actually his brain is just 'tuned' to Ancient Greek. Call me old fashioned but I would like the good old 'just because your X doesn't mean you can't be great' ethic. There was also an interesting drug taking scene... I'll leave it for you to watch though.
Overall an enjoyable film but don't expect to be blown away by the characters and plot development. I give this film <<<3 out of 5>>>
He said: I had higher expectations for this film than my better half mostly due to the amount of respect I have for Chris Columbus. The Director of the First two Harry Potters, the RENT film as well as countless others, Chris is notoriously known for respecting the source material while at the same time making it his own property.
The film was a bit heavy handed at times as well as a bit disrespectful regarding the dyslexia as Helen mentioned above. Another less than subtle message of the film is that "Daddy issues" are common place. Without giving too much of the film away I was less than pleased that these powerful young teenagers when their abilities were unveiled to them were more concerned with the Absentee parents than they were about the amazing abilities. Obviously I come from a strong Moral reasoning of "with great power comes great responsibility" belief, but what do you want from A Spidey fan, really?
This is a fun family film and it is worth watching it can be a bit silly at times (like crossing the united states twice in a matter of 3 days) and the "protector/sidekick" character was a bit annoying, I give it {{{{3.5 out of 5}}}}

This film is very clever in that it is clearly a social commentary of the lead up to the Iraq War but it does so under the veil of a fictional satire. It is laugh out loud funny, ridiculously offensive and scarily accurate in its comdeic portrayal of modern government.
With the Iraq Enquiry at the forefront of UK current affairs the idea of informants and influencers miscommunicating vital information is both funny and quite haunting. I am quite a fan of political comedy, which is why I asked that we review this film, and this really didn't disappoint.
For me the film was really a black comedy about spin-doctoring; the art of being deceptive and manipulative in order to win over public opinion. In a very 1984-like way we see politicians rewriting minutes of meetings and important documents in order for them to achieve their own agendas.
It was pretty clear who the characters were supposed to emmulate. Malcolm Tucker, the aggressive, almost satanic No. 10 spin doctor was obviously meant to be Alastair Campbell (the demon on Blair's shoulder). Simon Foster, a character caught up in both sides of the political arguement for and against war was reminiscent of the late David Kelly - a politician that committed suicide after 'sexing-up' the Iraq War dossier.
Overall I found this film very enjoyable. From the thousands of dramatisations about the Iraq War floating around this is the only one that is both accurate and funny, satirical and haunting. I give this film <<<4.5>>>
He said: I am not one that normally enjoys anything remotely political, I lived a large section of my life being led (and misled) by people thousands of miles of way that never knew the extent of the circumstances they were remote-controlling.
I think I enjoyed this film as it was told primarily from a British point of view and therefore I was able to give it more a degree of separation than I might have had it centered itself on the American side of the argument.
The film is very amusing at times and I think fans of sitcoms like The Office and the Modern Family will very much enjoy the quasi-documentary style of film. It gives you the feel of being a fly on the wall. There are laugh out loud moments and I felt comfortable with the development of each of the characters.
While this is not the film for everyone it was a fun film to watch. I give it {{{3.5 out of 5}}}}

This films fits perfectly into what you might expect from a Nancy Meyer film. She directed and/or wrote films such as Father of the Bride and Somethings Gotta Give i.e. films focused on middle aged men and women having some sort of breakdown or crisis... albeit a funny one. Like all of these types of film It's Complicated was light-hearted and easy to watch.
The thing I enjoyed most about this film was the chemistry between the children and their parents. Meryl Streep, as you would guess, play a great mum. They do tend to shove the 'perfect' children down your throats (there is lots of hugging and smiles) but hey... who doesn't like a bit of family love right?
Meryl, Alec and Steve make a great love triangle although, as a Steve Martin enthusiast, I would have liked to see more of his character. The thing that bothered me was the glossing over of how hurtful the relationship was to Alec Baldwin's second wife Agnes. The director highlighted her pain in one pained expression but that was pretty much it. The film focused more on how Alec and Meryl's children were affected through the movie.
Overall this film was fun but saccharine in some places and ignorant in others. Pretty harmless and enjoyable although it dragged a lot at the end. I give this film <<<3>>>

This is a film that as I was watching I thought over and over again how much my mother would like it. To be fair this film is aimed at the middle aged Demographic, though I completely believe it can be widely appreciated by any film goer at any age. It has a wonderful family dynamic that could have been easily over looked by other directors.
Helen mentions above how they conveniently never develop the second wife of Alec Baldwin's character Jake, Agnes. While I understand the reasoning (you are supposed to agree with Meryl's character that Jake was hers first.) I found the snub very distracting. (I am by no means a moral compass but even I had issue with the She started it argument) I agree that I would have liked to see more of Steve Martin but I felt I knew (or at least identified) with his character best.
The film could have ended about twenty minutes sooner, as the ending seemed to just be wading in the plot a bit, but over all it is an enjoyable film. I give it {{{3.5 out of 5}}}

As the trailer says this film was done in the classic tradition of Disney animation, it has the feel that once it is on your DVD shelf it will feel as though it has always been there. There is so much about this film that has throw backs to other classic Disney characters and archetypes. Helen and I left the film comparing certain characters to their Classic Disney ancestors. The music is composed beautifully by Randy Newman.
My only actual complaint with this film is the recent fad of lazy animation, that is to say as beautiful as this film is there is a dream sequence that just feels as though they didn't put as much effort in to it as the rest of the film. (similar to the "anime" dream sequence in Kung Fu Panda.) I might be alone in this but I really hope that this isn't the beginning of a new in thing in animation.
This is first and foremost a children friendly family film (one of the cutest things about the screening we viewed were the three dancing three year olds directly underneath the screen during the big song numbers.) I know with out a doubt that this will be on my DVD shelf next to Aladdin and the Emperor's New Groove and other Disney favorites. I give it {{{{4 out of 5}}}}

I really enjoyed this new Disney classic as I am sure it will become. Like James said about the DVD feeling like it has always been there I personally felt this film was one I had already seen - but not in a bad way. I was very much looking for that familiarity that Disney provides; the characters (a genie/mystery man ala Genie or Jafar, a sidekick ala Sebastian, a comic friend ala Baloo, a fairy godmother ala er... a fairy godmother etc), the fun songs, the uplifting story and the hand drawn animation I oh-so miss.
After recent animations such as Lilo and Stitch and The Emporers New Groove which had some songs but were not musicals The Princess and the Frog was really refreshing. There were lots of fun tunes all with a jazz theme playing on the New Orleans setting. The little girls dancing in the screen really reminded me how much Disney films and songs impact upon children. I am sure those kids will be watching this for a long while (as will I!)
The Princess and the Frog fulfills the staple requirement for a Disney film, that is 'mild peril', characters from 'broken' families (Walt once said "for every laugh there should be a tear") and a strong moral (in this case it was the never tiring film students' go-to, the American Dream).
I was expecting a heavier emphasis on the fact that this is the first black princess but I feel it was done quite well. I would be interested to hear from a Southern U.S. American what they thought of the represetation of race and place in this film. Feel free to comment!

I read somewhere that nearly half of the fiction sold last year was vampire related. That quote may or may not be true but we can all see that vampires are most definately 'in'. But this has a twist. I love the fact that vampires are the dominant species and that humans are the hunted. It makes a nice contrast to the usual 'vampires forced into hiding' plot.
However I have to say that despite a promosing premise the novelty of day being night and vice versa and everyone being a vampire from newsreaders to politicians wears off after a while. The lore, which is the best part about vampire stories, was intriguing but explained too fast. They hinted at a vampire outbreak caused by vampire bats but it is never explored fully... and not in the 'we like to keep you gussing way'.
Overall this film was enjoyable for the basic premise and the gore factor. Vampires like blood and apparently the film makers really do too! If you like to jump and have a laugh at some really graphic vampire action then go see it. I give this film <<<3 out of 5>>>

One of the most striking things about this film is the setting and set design, at one point I actually leaned over to Helen and remarked on the contrast of human refugee camp versus vampire establishments. Everything in the vampire enviroment was cold, metalic and generally unwelcoming and unforgiving, while being very modern and even practical. Where as in the human stronghold there are dark earth tones and warm lighting and a general feeling of being protected if not safe. The majority of the human surroundings were furnished in wood and Iron. While the Vampires had the higher end technologies the humans had very solid and practical armament. I am really not fond of a lot of the overly popular (read trendy) recent vampire inspirations (who in their right minds puts sparkling in the sun and vampires in the same concept?) At the same time I don't think that slapping sharp teeth on the 90210 (Vampire Diaries)demographic qualifies as authentic or viable either. I do however enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse True Blood series and still to this day love Whedon's brilliant Buffy and Angel series. I think this film falls somewhere deep in the middle of the two extremes. If you are looking for a different approach at what is fast becoming a tired genre and don't mind a ridiculous amount of gore, you should see this film. I give it {{{{3.5 out of 5}}}}

As our first review request we both entered this theatre with high expectations and I am really happy to say that I, myself at least really enjoyed this film. A unique idea told with a clever story. While it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Juno director Jason Reitman has a unique view on what many would consider the tired genre of romantic comedies. Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner’s adaptation of Walter Kim’s novel is brilliant. There is a lot of heavy stuff going on in this film, yet the film itself manages to avoid selling itself short, by not being cheaply sentimental or emotionally manipulative. I really enjoyed this film not only for the clever storytelling but also the slick editing that married with the plot. The sharp cuts, especially during the introduction of Clooney's character, matched really well with his charming and suave character.
Despite being early on in her career, Anna Kendrick held her own against Clooney and Farmiga. There was a good investment in her character by the writers where they could have easily pushed her right to the background. In actual fact it is her character that is the catalyst for Clooney evaluating his life. She therefore played quite an integral part and I was impressed by her honesty in the role (comedic crying aside).
For what seems at first glance to be a romantic comedy this film ends up in a different place. The main subject is about employment (as you see form the trailer Clooney's job is to fire people) and it is this that makes you consider the way you live your life and what your goals and aims really mean. But not in the crap cheesy way. In the slick Clooney way.

Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jim Broadbent, Steve Coogan, Bill Nighy, Timothy Dalton, Martin Freeman, Bill Bailey, Steve Merchant and basically any British male actor you can think of.
Despite being a cop film parody this film actually managed to depict quite an accurate portrayal of rural England. The creepy and quirky village people I have to say were comedically exaggerated into simple, set minded buffoons. The comedy mainly lies in the eccentric nature of the rural middle class and the alien nature of it to the London Metropolitan police officer.
In my opinion this film would have been better as a mystery/thriller parody than an action film parody as you see in the trailer. The contrast of action cliches is funny but I laughed more at the murder mystery plot and graphic gore which were played out in front of this idyllic West Country backdrop.
As is only natural, this film is compared to the Wright/Pegg/Frost debut Shaun of the Dead. Unlike a lot of people I did not prefer Hot Fuzz over Shaun. I felt the vision and presentation, as well as plot development were more thought out in Shaun. However saying this, I still think it was a fantastic follow up to what I class as one of Britain's funniest comedies.
If you like Peter Jackson-esque gore (Bad Taste) then you should see this film. If you don't understand parody then avoid it. I rate this film <<<3.5 out of 5>>>
He said: I think if anything this movies suffers from it's association with it better known cousin. Though I have seen this movie more than once previously when ever anyone suggests we watch it I am hesitant at first, there is this thought in the back of my head that it isn't as good as Shaun of the Dead. When in a lot of ways I feel this movie is superior to it. This film has an underlying joke of just how many British comedians they can introduce during the course of the story. There are action sequences that are taken from almost every action film you can think of with a lot of focus on Point Break and Bad Boys 2. Adapted from the biggest selling graphic novel of all time, Watchmen is a fascinating take of the world of superheroes. It was a clever mix of gritty realism, dystopian nightmares and hyperbolic cartoon-like idol. Set in an alternate 1980s where the Cold War is still raging, this is political, clever and tense.
In terms of cinematography and mood this film was a cross between Blade Runner and The Dark Knight. There are very few daytime scenes, and when they do appear it is a strange and unusual contrast to the darkness you became accustomed to. The framing has a panel comic quality and I am now intrigued to see the graphic novel to compare the shots.
The best thing about this film was the moral and political debates it raised. The superheroes of this film have been forced into hiding through claims of vigilantism. This viewpoint is contrasted against a 'for greater good' God-like ideology that is ever-relevant to 21st century political cultures.
To discuss all of the film's themes here in detail would take away the fun of watching it but they all appear to revolve around perception: masks and hidden identities, time and relativity, costumes and fetishism, love versus lust, etc.
I really do not want to give anything away about this film so I may write a spoilers review on my own blog at some point. With my film studies degree hat on have to give this film a <<<5 out of 5>>>

I think one of the strengths of this film is that though they did stray from some vital plot lines of the graphic novel they kept the heart and over all feel of its story. If you aren't a giant Super hero film fan this movie may not appeal to you, but it is a great film. Having seen it multiple times, I founf myself trying to match characters to their D.C. The film allowed the lead actors to keep to their strengths, that is to play themselves. Where the film excels is in its supporting cast, Mary Steenburgen and Sam Elliot are exceptional in their roles. The towns people of Ray, Wyoming were amusing if less than memorable. If you are looking for a 90 minute date night escape for you and your spouse this is aimed at you... She said: I have to admit that Did you hear about the Morgans? wasn’t as awful as I thought it might be. Not that it was an example of brilliant filmmaking either. The cinematography didn’t blow me away, the actors won’t be getting Oscars and the screenplay won’t go down in history, but then that wasn’t what I was expecting. I was expecting a typical rom-com... and a typical rom-com was what I got. I think most people have to admit the guilty pleasure of the odd I-don’t-have-to-think-about-this-too-hard film. This is one of those films: a separated New York couple are forced to live together in Wyoming. Hilarity and rekindling of lost feelings arises. What isn’t to like? Despite saying this however there were a few clichés too many for me. I don’t think I am giving anything away by saying that this had the perfect Hollywood ending. Everyone is happy. Everyone got what they wanted. I guess it isn’t a feel good film if there is a sad ending. I just find perfection somewhat anti-climatic nowadays. There was also a pro-gun theme in there somewhere. Let me just say this once in this blog (by once I mean lots of times): I hate guns. Yuck. But I guess a film set in a state which loves its rodeos, horse wrangling and hunting it was to be expected. We have seen Avatar twice now. It is one of those films that is so visually brilliant you don't feel you can take it all in during a single sitting. The first time we came out of the cinema we had one word that sprung to mind: pretty. This film is stunningly beautiful. Set on a distant moon called Pandora the creators of this film have designed an incredible world with mesmerizing plantlife, colourful creatures and glowing moss.
The word pretty however gives the wrong impression overall. It is an action film at heart depicting the conflict between a greedy civilisation and the natives of a new world. It is set in a future where corporate indifference and military ignorance have met. Think Aliens meets Dances with Wolves and you will be on the right lines.
As usual with films about aliens there is a social commentary on how different human races treat each other. But with the current hot potato of gloal warming this film delves into the way we treat the world we live in. We hear that Earth has no green left, and that we have killed our Mother (Nature). The Na'vi (the natives) are a species in tune with the nature of Pandora both spiritually and biologically.
We saw the film in 3D both times and I highly recommend you do the same. It hasn't fallen into the annoying LOOK AT US WE HAVE FUN 3D EFFECTS THAT MAKE YOU THINK THINGS ARE IN YOUR FACE ISN'T IT COOL category of 3D films. It actually uses the technology in the proper way - to make the film more believable. Pandora is novelty in 3D, it is realistic.
As a side note I personally find worlds which have complete ecosystems created more believable than others. A lot of sci-fi uses Earth-like planets with distinguishable similarities. How similar is Vulcan (or was I should now say, right?) from Earth. Pandora is a complete imagining... although I swear the creature noises are from Jurassic Park.
Anyway considering this film draws a lot of parallels with other movies it is very unique. If you want to see a great example of the advancment of special effects and digital film technology then watch this film. If you would prefer a romantic yet action filled adventure... then watch this film. I give this film <<<4.5 out of 5>>>
He said: If I am completely honest with myself I did not want to like this movie, I have been so inundated with the media saturation since Comic Con that I fully expected this movie to be a carbon copy of Dances with Wolves in space. James Cameron spent ten years developing this film and all I can say is he has done an amazing job.
Worldwide, it is estimated to garner a gross sales of 1.34 billion dollars. It has become the highest grossing film of 2009 as well as the second highest grossing film worldwide of all-time, only eclipsed by Cameron's own film "Titanic" (1.842 billion U.S. dollars). It will be the first IMAX release to gross 100 million dollars in global receipts, the North America box office authorities estimated.
As Helen has said Pandora is a beautiful moon, it feels alien and strange but completely authentic. Real-D lived up to its hype, for what is arguably the first time since it's introduction 4 years ago. The eco-system makes sense and works together (excluding that weird helicopter gecko thing, what kind of defensive mechanism is it to jump up and spin out of control?)
There are negative things that can be said about this film. While the look of the film is breathtakingly original and ground-breaking. The story concept is not. The plot and even some scenes seemed to be almost lifted from the Dances with wolves screenplay verbatim. The fact that surprised me is that it didn't annoy me, yes the subtle White guilt was heavily laid, yes tree hugging hippies will be showing this to their organic free range fed children (in their sweat shop manufactured clothing from the Gap) None of these facts take away from the quality of the film. Go now... See it. I give it {{{{4.5 out of 5 stars}}}}
